RTT vs Traditional Hypnotherapy: What's the Difference?

RTT (Rapid Transformational Therapy)

A hybrid therapy developed by Marisa Peer combining hypnotherapy, NLP, psychotherapy, and CBT to achieve rapid, lasting results by identifying and addressing root causes of issues.

Key Takeaways

  • RTT combines multiple therapeutic modalities for faster results
  • Traditional hypnotherapy takes a gradual, gentle approach over multiple sessions
  • RTT focuses intensively on root causes using regression techniques
  • Both approaches are effective - the best choice depends on your needs
  • A qualified therapist can combine elements from both approaches

"Should I try RTT or regular hypnotherapy?" It's one of the most common questions I get asked. The honest answer is: it depends. But let me explain both so you can get a sense of what might suit you.

First, What's RTT?

RTT (Rapid Transformational Therapy) was developed by Marisa Peer. It's not a replacement for hypnotherapy; it's more like hypnotherapy's intensive cousin. It pulls together techniques from hypnotherapy, NLP, psychotherapy and CBT into one focused approach.

The clue's in the name: it's designed to work fast. Where traditional hypnotherapy might gently layer in changes over several sessions, RTT goes hunting for the root cause in the first session and works to shift it there and then.

How Traditional Hypnotherapy Works

Think of traditional hypnotherapy as a steady, cumulative approach. We use the relaxed hypnotic state to introduce positive suggestions, calm your nervous system, and gradually shift unhelpful patterns.

It's excellent for things like building confidence over time, managing ongoing stress, improving sleep, or gently working through issues where you're not sure exactly where they started. The changes build session by session.

How RTT Works Differently

RTT is more like detective work. We use regression, going back to significant memories, to find the moment when a belief or pattern first took hold. Not to dwell there, but to understand it.

Once we find it, we reframe it. That critical comment from a teacher when you were seven, the moment you decided you weren't good enough, the experience that taught you the world wasn't safe: we change how your mind holds that memory.

After the session, you get a personalised recording to listen to for 21 days. This reinforces the new beliefs while your brain is rewiring itself.

So Which Do You Need?

RTT might be your thing if:

  • You have a specific issue you want to tackle head-on
  • You're ready to do some deeper work
  • You want to understand why you are the way you are
  • You're after faster results (often 1-3 sessions)

Traditional hypnotherapy might suit you better if:

  • You prefer a gentler, gradual approach
  • You're working on general wellbeing rather than one specific issue
  • You'd like ongoing support over time
  • You're new to this and want to ease in

What I Actually Do

Here's the thing: I'm trained in both. And in EMDR, EFT, and NLP. So when you come to me, I don't force you into one box. We talk about what's going on, what you want to achieve, and I'll suggest the approach, or combination of approaches, that makes most sense.

Sometimes that's pure RTT. Sometimes it's traditional hypnotherapy. Often it's a blend. The goal is always the same: lasting change that actually sticks.
